President's introduction
Richard Evans introduces PepsiCo UK & Ireland's 2011 Health Update.
In March 2010, we set out our vision to build a business whose future profit and growth is driven by healthier products. We established targets that would stretch the business and pave the way for PepsiCo to grow sustainably and successfully. With our 2011 Health Update I am pleased to report good progress against our targets and to fulfil the promise we made to openly report progress on an annual basis.
We are delivering on our promise to reformulate our core products and reshape our portfolio; salt levels in Walkers have decreased by 11.7% and we've launched the UK's first 100% fruit juice lemonade.
We are using our marketing expertise to promote healthier choices and working to widen availability of healthier ranges; this year we launched a multi-million pound Sunbites advertising campaign and Tropicana is now available in 3500 more quick serve restaurants including Burger King and McDonalds.
This is the beginning of our journey. Some of our targets fall within the timeframe of this update, others are longer term and will take a few years to deliver. We have not met all of our short term targets and have chosen to be transparent about the setbacks and next steps. We want to be judged by what we do, not what we say.
We do not just act as an autonomous company. We are part of a wider industry, and part also of a wider process of change centred on the Department of Health's Public Health Responsibility Deal. We seek to be an intrinsic part of this process and use our networks, resources and marketing capabilities positively to improve the diets of UK food consumers.
We want this update to stimulate comment and debate. It is not intended to be a one way piece of communication and we welcome your ideas and your feedback. We can only achieve what we are determined to do in a spirit of partnership. We know that the kind of change we all seek to achieve is not easy, but we are committed to playing our part. And this update, I hope, provides demonstrable evidence of that commitment.
We welcome what you have to say.
