Portion size

Portion size can be a key determinant of consumers' intake of calories and other nutrients, both at meal times and when snacking.

The core of our UK business, savoury snacks, is based around smaller portion sizes. Over 89% of Walkers Crisps sales are from 25g bags, purchased in multipacks. In contrast, around 2% of Walkers Crisps sales are of 50g "Big Eat/Grab Bags".

Portion sizes of Pepsi, and other carbonated soft drinks, are more variable. The majority of sales are in sharing, two-litre bottles. Pepsi Raw, our cola made using naturally sourced ingredients launched in 2008, was formulated with 10% less sugar than regular Pepsi and is available only in smaller portions - 300ml bottles and 250ml cans.

We know that stakeholders have strong concerns about portion sizes, both of savoury snacks and full- sugar soft drinks.

So, by 2015, we will introduce a voluntary calorie cap of 160 Calories across single-serve savoury snacks without positive nutrition. But we know that, for such action to be sustainable commercially, other companies would need to take equivalent action, to create a level playing field. Without other companies making similar moves, consumers could still switch to other, less healthy or larger portion snacks. So we will also work within the food industry and with other stakeholders to encourage appropriate portion sizes across all snacks (see Stakeholder engagement and public policy).

Dilemma - How can action on portion sizes be taken where consumers want bigger servings?
