Waste & packaging

Society is using the Earth's resources much faster than they can be replaced. To play our part in addressing this unsustainable consumption, we will reduce our use of non-renewable energy and materials, and send less waste to landfill.

Reducing waste to landfill

Building on the 23.6% reduction in solid waste sent to landfill during 2007, we committed to a further reduction of 20% during 2008. We actually achieved a 39% reduction, almost doubling our target.

In 2008 we added new sites into the scope of our data and performance management, for example waste from all our distribution centres and our Skelmersdale factory, which is now fully operational. Using this new wider scope, our total waste to landfull was 3,699 tonnes.

Pledge: Reduce PIUK total waste to landfi ll by further 20% during 2008.

Progress: In 2008 we reduced our total waste to landfill by 39%.

Reducing Packaging

As part of a two-year plan to reduce Walkers packaging weight by 10%, we have so far achieved a 2% saving by removing 2.5 mm from the end seals of Walkers bags. This initiative prevented the emission of 1,400 tonnes of CO2e and generated £1 million savings. We have also implemented a project to shrink our carbdoard cases resulting in a total of 4,500 tonnes of annual corrugate saving. Finally, we reduced the thickness of the tie layer that links the inner and outer surfaces of our packets. Each of these steps to use less material in our packaging also has a clear business case - saving us money as well as using less fossil fuels or natural resources.

Pledge: Reduce Walkers packaging weight by a further 10% by 2010.

Progress: Packaging lightweighted by further 2% during 2008, but current plans will not achieve 10% target.
