Climate change
The earth's climate is changing, with unpredictable weather events, droughts and storms causing serious consequences for our consumers, supply chains and business.
To play our part in mitigating climate change, we are committed to breaking the link between business growth and an increasing carbon footprint by minimising our energy use and investing in renewable sources of energy.
We are also empowering and engaging suppliers and consumers in our carbon reduction journey.
Our pledges made in 2008
- All energy used in PIUK manufacturing and distribution to be from renewable sources within 15 years.
- Increase total share of PIUK electricity from renewable sources from 8% to 14% within 3 years.
- Reduce PIUK energy use by a further 20% per kg of production within 3 years.
- Replace PIUK distribution fleet with the latest low-emissions vehicles, and reduce harmful pollutant by 60% within 10 years.
- Use waste frying oil from Walkers as a 5% mix biofuel in our UK distribution fleet.
- All our British manufacturing sites to be ISO 14001 accredited by the end of 2008.
- Quaker to work towards adopting the Carbon Trust Carbon Reduction Label.
- Walkers to incentivise and engage the public on holidaying in Britain during 2008.
Key achievements
In the first year after our pledges we:
- Reduced our comparative carbon footprint by 3.7%. Due to improved reporting our absolute carbon footprint has increased by 4.4% to 219.473 tonnes.
- Sourced 4% of our total energy from renewable sources and set out a road map to achieve our aim of being fossil fuel free by 2023.
- More than doubled our share of electricity from renewable sources from 8% to 17.4%, well above our target of 14%.
- Reduced energy use by 12.5%, with a target of 20% by the end of 2011
