The policy context

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the prevalence of obesity has risen three-fold or more in many European countries since the 1980s.

This rapid evolution has caused alarm amongst policy-makers and the public alike. European Governments have sought to tackle the problem by focusing primarily on optimising diets and promoting an increase in physical activity.

At an international level, the WHO has tried to be active in working on common solutions. In 2004, the WHO adopted a Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health and continues to focus on developing further specific guidelines for its member countries.
