Fat and health

Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of ill health and death in many European countries.

The UK has one of the highest rates of coronary heart disease in the world.

A diet high in saturated fat increases the risks of elevated blood cholesterol levels, and so increases the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and other vascular conditions.

Fortunately there are a number of preventative measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of heart disease. Dietary modification to reduce levels of blood cholesterol is probably one of the most important. Reducing total and saturated fat intakes, and increasing the proportion of unsaturated fats in the diet can help to reduce blood cholesterol levels, which will help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
