Walkers announces further salt reduction commitment
10% reduction in 2009 to remove 150 tonnes of salt per year from the UK diet
Walkers, part of PepsiCo, has today announced that it is to cut salt levels across Walkers Crisps, Walkers Baked and Sensations by 10% in 2009.
The reduction, which will remove a total of 150 tonnes of salt per year from the UK diet, is the latest step in Walkers' ongoing commitment to makes its crisps healthier.
Building on Walkers' achievements to date, from June 2009 a standard bag of Walkers crisps will contain on average less than half a gram of salt, or just 8% of an adult's guideline daily amount.
The new reductions will also help Walkers towards meeting the Food Standards Agency's future salt reduction targets.
A spokesman for Walkers, said:
"Our overriding goal is to make our products as healthy as possible without compromising on taste. This announcement is further proof of that commitment, and we will continue to reformulate our existing products as well as launch new, great tasting snacks."
Since 2003, Walkers has invested over £20 million in research and development to reduce the salt and saturated fat in its products, removing 2,400 tonnes of salt and 40,000 tonnes of saturated fat from the British diet. During this process, Walkers Crisps were re-launched in 2006 with 25% less salt.
Walkers Sensations now have the equivalent of around 45% less salt than at the end of 2006, and salt across snacks such as Quavers, Monster Munch, Wotsits and French Fries has been reduced by as much as 55%.
