PepsiCo UK reports 2008/09 environmental progress: reduced energy and water use, less waste to landfill, renewables doubled

Cover from the PepsiCo UK & Ireland Environmental Sustainability Report

In 2008 PepsiCo UK & Ireland (PIUK) published our first Environmental Sustainability Report, including pledges for both short-term action and a longer-term transformation of our business. One year into our commitments we have published an update on our progress and challenges. Highlights include reducing our waste to landfill by 39%, cutting our energy use by 11.8% and water use by 2.1%, and keeping our absolute carbon emissions flat despite business growth of almost 10%.

23 September 2009

In our 2008 Environmental Sustainability Report we promised to make our entire UK operation fossil fuel free over the next decade and a half. We promised to unplug our Walkers factories from the water grid, and we promised to send nothing to landfill, up and down our whole supply chain. We are currently exploring the potential to install on-site renewable sources of energy at all our manufacturing and distribution sites and starting to develop technology to capture water embedded in our potatoes, to move towards zero water intake at our Walkers factories. We are also acting as an agent for change with our suppliers and growers to reduce our overall impact supply chain impacts. Finally, we have also redoubled our efforts to bring outside expertise into our business, partnering or taking advice from the Carbon Trust, Carbon Disclosure Project, WWF and a host of others.

In this year's Environmental Sustainability Update, we have sought to report how we are progressing towards our public commitments. PIUK is committed to transparency, bringing outside perspectives into our strategy, and reporting honestly and openly.
