PepsiCo UK progress on energy and water saving highlighted in report

Update on sustainability of soft drinks industry praises Tropicana and Britvic achievements

11 June 2009

PepsiCo UK has been highlighted by a British Soft Drinks Association report as making progress in embedding sustainability throughout its operations. The report highlighted Tropicana's increasing use of renewable energy, its work to minimise carbon and water footprints and to reduce packaging used and waste generated.

The report is a follow up to the 'Soft Drinks Industry Sustainability Strategy', launched by the British Soft Drinks Association in June 2008, which sets out ambitious future challenges for the sector around climate change, waste and packaging, water and transport. These included achieving a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2020, developing carbon footprint reports, zero manufacturing waste to landfill from 2015 and improving the sustainability of soft drinks packaging.

The work of Tropicana to deliver 33% energy reductions since 2004, and switching to 100% certified green electricity in 2008 were highlighted by the report. Tropicana's Zeebrugge site, which bottles fruit juice for the UK market, now uses 50% less water per litre of production than in 2004, and last year developed a detailed water map to drive further efficiency across its operations.

The achievements of Britvic, which bottles a number of products for PepsiCo UK including Pepsi, 7UP and V-Water, were also recognised. The company has reduced the energy used in manufacturing by 30% since 1997 and this year will trial a number of low impact chillers that could potentially reduce energy use by a further 25%. Britvic has also reduced waste to landfill by 13.8% since last year and reduced its overall water to product ratio by 17.7% since 2002.
