PepsiCo UK doubles green electricity
PepsiCo UK has doubled the amount of its electricity used from renewable sources (from 8% in 2007 to 16%) exceeding its public environmental pledge, and encouraging greater demand for energy from wind, solar and hydropower.

Decreasing our reliance on fossil fuels, and reducing our carbon footprint, are core to PepsiCo's vision of Performance with Purpose - delivering societies' needs alongside strong financial performance. Our business, our consumers and our supply chain all rely on a healthy planet and sustainable use of resources.
In our first ever UK Environmental Sustainability Report, in 2008, we pledged to increase the total share of PepsiCo UK (PIUK) electricity from renewable sources from 8% to 14% within 3 years. By reaching 16% in year one, we have exceeded our target and pushed significantly ahead of the UK national average of 5.9%. Our Quaker factory in Cupar, Scotland uses 100% renewable energy. Two other PepsiCo sites that supply the UK market have also now switched to green electricity - our Tropicana plant in Zeebrugge, Belgium (100% renewable) and our Quaker factory at Rotterdam, Holland (45% renewable) - helping us deliver our commitment.
The vast majority of our direct carbon footprint comes from the energy used to power our factories. Over the last year we assessed each of our manufacturing sites' suitability to host on-site renewables, including wind, solar and bio-mass. We will now fast-track several projects for investment, including turning farm waste into energy. A full update on how we're doing against our environmental targets will be published in September.
