Tropicana Pure Premium Orange Juice has become the first North American product to receive Carbon Trust certification. This follows the pioneering of the Carbon Trust Reduction Label in the UK by Walkers Crisps.
The certification is the beginning of an innovative partnership between PepsiCo and the Carbon Trust to certify the carbon footprint of several PepsiCo products.
Working with the Columbia Earth Institute, PepsiCo calculated the lifecycle carbon footprint of the 64 ounce container of Tropicana Pure Premium Orange Juice - which the Carbon Trust certified, giving PepsiCo a verifiable benchmark against which we can measure our progress in reducing greenhouse gases going forward.
The carbon footprint was calculated using an independent review of scientific lifecycle data. The review looked at the energy consumed in each stage of the product's lifecycle, working out the equivalent CO2 from each stage - the total of which was estimated to be 1.7 kilograms.
The agreement with the Carbon Trust is part of an ongoing process to improve our environmental sustainability, including a commitment to reduce our water consumption and energy by 20% and use of fuel by 25% by 2015.
Our partnership has been featured in the New York Times. See here for the article.
