Is there life out there?

71% of Brits believe we are not alone

As Doritos prepares to make history by sending the first ever advert into Space and trying to communicate with Extra Terrestrial life, it releases survey results that reveal 71% of the UK public believe E.T. life exists. The research also reveals that one in two people (48%) would like to come in contact with an alien and 61% think that we will enter into regular communication with an alien species in the future.

The survey was commissioned by Doritos to celebrate the UK's first ever broadcast to the Universe. On June 12th the Doritos will beam an advert towards UMa47, one of the few solar systems with a habitable zone capable of supporting life, and the UK public is being asked to decide what the message should be.

A panel of judges has shortlisted five home-made adverts from over one thousand originally entered into Doritos' You Make It, We Play It competition, but are leaving the final and most critical decision to the public.

Nick Pope, former Head of the MoD's UFO project said: "I support this bold new venture in space communication. If there's life out there, this could be our best way of making contact. As humanity reaches out to the stars, this broadcast could lead to us finding the real ET. This is a historic day in our continuing search for alien life".

Peter Charles, Head of the Doritos Broadcast Project said: "Never before has an advert been sent to the Universe. We are attempting a world first with our broadcast and want the British public to get involved and decide what this historically defining message to the stars should be."

To have a say on what the first ever advert broadcast to extra terrestrials should look like visit the Doritos website and cast your vote. Voting opens on Tuesday 27 May and closes at 23.59 on June 10th. The winning advert will be broadcast extra terrestrially on 12th June and be premiered on terrestrial TV on 15th June.

The space bound ad will be broadcast from a 500MHz Ultra High Frequency Radar at the EISCAT Space Centre in Svalbard, Norway. The transmission is being directed at a solar system just 42 light years away from Earth with planets that orbit its star '47 Ursae Majoris' (UMa47). UMa47 is located in the 'Ursa Major' constellation, also known as the Great Bear or Plough. It is very similar to our Sun and hosts a habitable zone that could potentially harbour small terrestrial planets and support life similar to ours.
