Food and Drink Federation (FDF) report highlights PepsiCo, and food industry, progress on environmental commitments

PepsiCo UK highlighted as making "significant strides" in reducing its environmental impact

27 November 2008

The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has released a report today showing how PepsiCo UK is helping the UK's food and drink sector to make a real difference to the environment. The report shows how the FDF's members have reduced their CO2 emissions by 17% since 1990 as part of an ambitious plan to mitigate their environmental impact. This is the equivalent of taking 22,000 cars off UK roads each year.

During 2007 PepsiCo UK reduced by 10,000 tonnes the solid waste from its UK operations compared to 2006, a reduction achieved through using new lightweight materials and by investing in new high-precision machinery.

The report also commended PepsiCo UK on continuing to perform strongly at recycling solid waste that could not be avoided. In 2007, 90% of PepsiCo's solid waste was recycled, totalling some 30,060 tonnes. It also noted the contribution that PepsiCo UK has made in reducing the industry's food transport miles. PepsiCo UK is saving about 1 million food transport miles per year from the UK's roads following a review in 2007 of how it transports its raw materials and finished goods.
