Alongside his frustration with other companies that don't 'get it', Walter explained how setting ambitious goals, empowering employees and working with the right organisations - from universities to arch-critics - has helped PepsiCo to become a sustainability leader.

Walter is in charge of leading PepsiCo's environmental sustainability agenda - both in the UK and across Europe. In the interview Walter talked in detail about how he is driving change in PepsiCo - and why for him it is such an important issue.

As well as outlining how he turns ambitious goals into real strategy, Walter voiced his frustration at companies who don't seem to 'get it'.

"I don't understand why companies don't see the benefits. We are cutting costs by saving water, saving electricity and reducing waste. It's not just about doing what's right; there is a clear business case. It's great for your employees, they get it, because they want to be proud of being part of a good business, consumers get it, and customers like it as we reduce waste and packaging. Communities also love it, which is important given that 80% of our employees live within 20 miles of our factories."

According to Walter, the key to success is setting ambitious targets that you don't yet have the knowledge to achieve. As a rule of thumb, if you know how to get half of the way there, then innovation and ingenuity is likely to take you the full distance.
