i-crop™
i-crop™ is a revolutionary crop management system, developed by PepsiCo UK in partnership with Cambridge University.
The new web-based, 'precision farming' technology, is designed to help farmers produce more by using less water. i-crop™ measures the inputs and outputs of farming activity, producing precise data that helps growers make informed decisions about when to irrigate crops and how much water to use.
More crop per drop
i-crop™ brings together data drawn from soil moisture probes in the fields and the local weather station. Growers access the information online and can then make decisions about applying water to their crops. This more precise approach to farming will reduce under- and over-watering as well as reducing carbon emissions by using less energy.
Created through collaboration
PepsiCo developed i-crop™ in partnership with Cambridge University Farms. The University has been researching Agronomy for 25 years and their insight and expertise has been invaluable in creating the system. It has taken five years of close collaboration to bring i-crop™ to the stage where it can be used commercially by growers.
Monitoring stage
i-crop™ is being trialled now on over 20 farms across the UK, helping farmers to record their inputs, outputs and growth data more accurately. Farmers have reported very good results at this initial monitoring stage, with some reaching around 90% efficiency for water usage.
Cutting water use by 50%
Developed by PepsiCo for our farmers, i-crop™ will play a key role in reducing our water usage by 50% in 5 years.
