Tropicana became part of the PepsiCo family in 1998 and has since become the world's leading producer of fruit juices. In the UK, we are the fourth best-selling soft drinks brand.
Tropicana's history
Tropicana was founded in 1947 by Anthony Rossi. Born in Sicily in 1900, he emigrated to the United States at the age of 21. An entrepreneur, he began selling gift boxes of Florida citrus fruit to department stores, including Macy's and Gimbel's in New York.
Rossi relocated to western Florida in 1947 where he began the company we know today as Tropicana.
A flash of brilliance
In 1954, Rossi pioneered a new process called 'flash pasteurisation'. This process briefly raises the temperature of the juice, making it safe for an extended shelf life.
For the first time, customers could purchase the fresh taste of pure 100% Florida orange juice in a ready-to-serve package. Flash pasteurisation is now a popular process used widely in fruit juice packing.
Enjoying Tropicana
At Tropicana, we are most famous for our Pure Premium range in single flavours such as Orange and Pink Grapefruit and blended flavours, such as Raspberry and Mandarin and Tropical Fruit.
We include a Guideline Daily Amount (GDA) label on all Tropicana drinks. This label shows the amount of energy and key nutrients provided in a portion of the product, and the contribution that it makes to the GDA for that nutrient, making it easier for consumers to make informed decisions about a healthy, balanced diet.
Part of a healthy, balanced diet
Fruit is an important source of vitamin C, folic acid, minerals such as potassium, dietary fibre and other naturally-occurring ingredients which bring health benefits.
Every serving of any Tropicana Pure Premium and Tropicana Kids! provides the equivalent of one portion of fruit. Each Tropicana Smoothie is the equivalent of two portions. This makes all Tropicana drinks an easy and convenient way to boost daily fruit consumption.
Our fruit
At Tropicana, we source our fruit from around the world to ensure the best fruits are selected to produce the finest juices. All of our fruit is pressed within 24 hours of being hand- picked from the tree to ensure maximum freshness.
It takes 18 oranges to make one litre of Tropicana Pure Premium orange juice. Tropicana can process more than 50 million oranges in a single day, which is the same as over a million gallons of orange juice, or 16 million glasses of juice.
Making Tropicana more sustainable
At Tropicana, we are committed to being environmentally sustainable and we actively seek ways to reduce our carbon footprint. Almost all our juice and fruit is transported via ship, which is among the most sustainable forms of transport.
We are currently looking at Tropicana's carbon footprint and identifying ways of reducing it.
We also work closely with our suppliers to look at sustainability through the supply chain. For example, Citrosuco, a Brazilian orange pressing plant, supplies all Tropicana's orange juice in the UK. The plant is powered entirely by renewable energy using the fibre from local sugar cane. Equally, almost all of the orange waste is recycled or reused - even the orange peel is fed to cows.
Tropicana supply chain
Tropicana sources premium fruit from across the globe. We are committed to ensuring that all our fruit is sourced ethically and sustainably.
Our suppliers agree to a code of conduct. This ensures a level of standard, even where accreditation schemes, such as Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance, are unavailable.
Citrosuco, for example, provides good working conditions and supports employees through providing accommodation for its most skilled workers as well as a free bus service to all. Citrosuco also funds community programmes including "Bom de Bola", which uses football to promote education and physical activity to children.
